Cordula Wagner new director of NIVEL, Peter Groenewegen steps down

Prof. dr. Cordula Wagner will become director of NIVEL – the Netherlands institute for health services research. Her appointment will begin on 1 January 2016.

Cordula Wagner is currently programme coordinator ‘Organisation and quality of health care’ at NIVEL, professor of patient safety at VU University Medical Center and head of the research center ‘Safety 4 Patients’ at EMGO+ Institute for Health and Care Research/VU University Medical Center, Amsterdam.

Cordula Wagner’s research has focused mostly on quality systems across Europe, interventions to improve patient safety in hospital care, measuring patient-related outcomes, and on team performance in long-term care. She conducted her research in close collaboration with policy makers and the field itself. A major outcome of this has been a reduction in potentially preventable deaths in Dutch hospitals. She is also a member of various scientific committees and supervisory bodies.

Prof. dr. Eduard Klasen, chair of NIVEL’s supervisory board said: “We are thrilled that Cordula Wagner will become the new director of NIVEL. Her strength lies in bridging the gap between science and practice, which fits perfectly with the double mission that NIVEL has, namely achieving an impact on both science and society.

We want to thank our previous director Peter Groenewegen for his years of service and leadership. He has served as director of NIVEL since 2009 and has steered the institute excellently through some difficult years, as a result of the financial crisis.”

Peter Groenewegen will continue working at NIVEL focusing on conducting research, as senior researcher in the programme, ‘Health care systems and governance’.
