Three years of experience with a Dutch mental health consultation scheme for primary care providers. For three years, 120 projects have been operating in which primary care providers receive specialised consultation form mental health professionals. Most projects keep records of their consultation sessions on standardised report forms. After an analysis of some 20,000 recorded consultations, this article summarises the backgrounds of the participants, the issues raised in the sessions and the recommendations made. It then develops a typology of the different froms that consultation can take, and it assesses the degree to which each of these variations serves the original aims of the consultation scheme.
