Conclusions
- The European Influenza Surveillance Scheme (EISS) has grown considerably over the last eleven years and included 26 of the 27 EU countries (only Bulgaria was not included) and Norway, Serbia, Switzerland and Ukraine during the 2006-2007 season. Serbia and Ukraine were new member countries.
- During the 2006-2007 season EISS was coordinated by Nivel (Netherlands Institute for Health Services Research). As of the 2 of September 2008 EISS has been coordinated by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control in Stockholm, Sweden.
- The 2006-2007 influenza season in Europe was characterised by moderate clinical activity, a south to north spread pattern across Europe with a dominance of influenza A(H3). Overall there was a good match between the vaccine virus strains and the reported virus strains.

Method
This report was revealed by data collected by sentinel physicians and respiratory specimens tested in 30 European countries as part of the European surveillance system EISS. Overall there was a good match between the vaccine virus strains and the reported virus strains.
