In the current healthcare system of the Netherlands the role of the patient becomes more prominent. To
achieve more patient-centred care, more insight is needed in what patients actually desire and experience. Therefore, transparency in the performance of healthcare providers is needed. A way to explore this, is by using an instrument that measures the quality of care from the patient’s perspective.

The results of this searching of available instruments indicates that many Dutch radiotherapy centres
attempt to measure patient experiences. However, most of them restrict to patient satisfaction research.
From the international literature it appears that there is more attention for assessing the quality of oncology care from the patient’s perspective rather than radiotherapy.

In conclusion, there is a need for a standardized instrument for radiation care. A Consumer Quality Index (CQI) questionnaire measures real experiences resulting in opportunities for quality improvement, quality assurance and mutual comparison of performances of radiotherapy centres. A CQI Radiotherapy is now in development.
