GPs see many patients with psychological symptoms but they feel restricted in their therapeutic possibilities. Treatment of psychological disorder, other than depression and sleep disorder are not perceived as a task assignment by many GPs, and if they treat psychological disorders it is limited to psychopharmaceutical therapy. Patients, however, prefer counselling to drugs. Therefore, we made an inventory of psychological screening tools and interventions that can be applied in general practice and of the providers who should carry out such interventions. Possible interventions were collected by a systematic literature review. The results of the review have been presented twice to a panel of providers and experts, asking which providers were best suited to carry out the interventions. 14 screening instruments and 21 interventions were found, that could be categorized in 6 major groups. Those instruments and interventions covered a vast array of psychological disorders. In most cases a practice nurse or a social psychiatric nurse was considered most suited to carry out the interventions. In some cases, the GP was the most obvious provider. Social workers or primary care psychologists only can be considered after referral. The interventions and their application fit well in a stepped care approach. (aut. ref.)
