At the moment, Dutch primary health care is changing towards a more demand orientated and locally planned form. This development is, however, hampered by the lack of data on local demand for primary care services. The ‘Vraag Aanbod Analyse Monitor’ (VAAM) fulfils this need. With this instrument, which is available as an Internet application, the demand for care from several primary care providers in a district, neighbourhood or municipality is estimated based on sociodemographic characteristics of the geographic area. This study aims to provide insight into the validity of the estimations of the VAAM, by comparing the estimations for the ten neighbourhoods of Utrecht with population data on health status and utilisation of care from health questionnaires of the Municipal Health Service in Utrecht. Comparisons are made using Pearson’s correlation coefficients. For the majority of the studied variables, estimations based on the VAAM were comparable to the results of the health questionnaires, which is an indication of the validity of the estimations of the VAAM. The results therefore provide enough ground for a further development of the VAAM. In the light of information about health status and use of care from other sources, the VAAM can contribute to a more demand orientated primary health care. (aut. ref)
