A project to investigate the Role of influenza and RSV on age-specific hospitalisations in the United Kingdom
As a follow-up to the EPIA project, the Royal College of General Practitioners Research and Surveillance Centre (RCGP) would like to receive an EPIA-like model to investigate datasets in its control. In particular the impacts of influenza and RSV are so bound up with each other that any work to be done with RSV needs to be based on an integrated model covering both viruses.
Work done in the EPIA project prepared a model that was applicable to ILI consultation rates but did not have an ideal fit to hospitalisation data. For the purposes of certain time series datasets, one needs to de-trend the data (this was necessary for the hospitalisation data in the United Kingdom) and for other datasets one may want to include more than two factors in the model to explain the observed seasonality (e.g. influenza, RSV, rhinoviruses and parainfluenza).
The purpose of this project is to create a flexible model, for use at the RCGP, for the investigation of relevant datasets especially in relation to influenza and Respiratory Syncytial Viruses
A biostatistician from NIVEL will update the EPIA model. The model will then be tested and shared with the RCGP. NIVEL will participate in the preparation of an article on the role of influenza and RSV on age-specific hospitalisations in the United Kingdom.
