Effective communication rests at the core of medicine, especially when patients are confronted with progressive disease and death. Communication can mitigate the distress of receiving bad news and influence patients' psychological functioning and adaptation to a new situation. Whereas the benefits of good communication might seem clear, the costs of its failure are perhaps even clearer.
