Child health and general practitioners' management, 1987 - 2001.

Otters, H., Schellevis, F. Child health and general practitioners' management, 1987 - 2001. In: G.P. Westert; L. Jabaaij; F.G. Schellevis. Morbidity, performance and quality in primary care: Dutch general practice on stage. Oxon: Radcliffe Publishing, 2006. 67-73
This contribution compares the presentation and management of childhood morbidity (0-17 years) in
general practice in 2001 with that in 1987. In the Netherlands, childhood morbidity presented to the
general practitioner (GP) has changed: (infectious) skin problems have become more important. In
2001, incidence rates of most respiratory infections and acute otitis media were much lower.
Although efforts to improve antibiotic prescription have intensified (e.g. introduction of
guidelines), children with respiratory infections and acute otitis media were prescribed antibiotics
more often in 2001 than in 1987. This can probably partly be explained by a change in consultation
threshold in 2001. Overall, GPs referred fewer children to specialists in 2001. (aut. ref.)
