Aim: To review Public Health (PH) literature from Europe over 10 years, 1995–2005; to make recommendations for future research policy and funding. Background: Two PH overviews and six topic area reviews were undertaken. Areas, identified through EUPHA, included health promotion, infectious disease, environmental health, genetic epidemiology, public health management, and health services research. Methods: Search strategies based on frameworks (definitions, key words, inclusion and exclusion criteria) were designed. PubMed was searched for each topic area. Results: Each review typically produced 6–10 000 publications over 10 years. There were technical issues in deciding which datasets to interrogate and how to define research papers (specificity, positive predictive value). Different countries were strong in different areas (France is a strong publisher of genetic epidemiology research). Discussion: This broad approach to describing public health research across Europe has clear implications for developing future EU funded programmes of research. (aut. ref.)
